In Japan during the 1800's they did not have built-in storage in the home but rather movable chest, and they took advantage of every possible space available in the home.

My desire was to take the basic design of the Tansu step chest and update it for use in today's home.The woods used are Makore (solid and veneer) and Maple Cluster Burl for the drawer fronts. The black inlay which delineates the Makore and Maple Burl is 1/32 thick.

The pulls are hand forged black iron made in a tiny village in the Mie prefecture in Central Japan . The style of the pulls is called Warbi and their size is 2 3/8 by 4 ¾. The inside drawers dimensions are 7 ½ by 19 by various widths. All the drawers are dovetailed with full extension concealed soft self-closing slides. This system allows smooth closing action of the drawer while being concealed from view.

The two most top tiers are cedar-lined compartments accessible via a door to store sweaters and other garments. The side panels, both large and small, are cut to form a diamond pattern from the natural Makore wood grain.

Height: 6 feet, Depth 22 inches, and max width is 63 inches.
