In Japan during the 1800's they did not have built-in storage in the home but rather movable chest, and they took advantage of every possible space available in the home.
This piece was commissioned and is used as a room
divider between the great room and dining room. Both sides are
'fronts' or show faces as the door and drawers open in both
directions.
Highly figured Oregon Black walnut makes up the
carcass and the drawer sides are eastern hard maple. The door
fronts are re-sawn and book matched. The drawer fronts are
also re-sawn and book matched vertially.
The pulls are hand forged black iron made in a tiny village in the Mie prefecture in Central Japan . The style of the pulls is called Warbi and their size is 2 3/8 by 4 ¾.
