Detail of Bookcase

I took the elements from a Shoji screens and incorporated them into this bookcase. The design of the door grates is called Kumiko and the legs take its shape from the Omune, which is the top of a temple or important buildings in Japan in the 1800 and 1900s.

The bookcase is made from Makore, and Makore veneer which is used for the back and shelves. The casework detail is hand cut dovetails. Peruvian Walnut is used for the door grates, and for the negative space just below the top.

The pulls are hand forged black iron made in a tiny village in the Mie prefecture in Central Japan . This casework can hold books, CDs, and DVDs. The internal depth of the piece is 11 inches. Shelves are included (not shown)

Height: 50 ½ inches, depth 13 ¾ inches, and width 30 inches.
