Joinery:
All joints are mortise and tenon. On the long joints I use splines that perform the same function as a tenon but is easier and stronger.
Wood & Materials:
The face is solid Eastern Maple, surfaces raw Eastern Maple, panels are Birdseye Maple, and trim is Eastern Walnut.
Unusual Techniques & Hardware:
The raw veneer is cut from one log and came in pieces about ten inches wide and ten feet long. The veneer is cut to length in my workshop, I flint match the sheets and then glue it to the substrates of MDF (medium density fiberboard). I use MDF because it is strong and a good use of recycled wood products as more manufactures are making MDF with some recycled wood. The back is Russian Plywood (name only). The reason I chose this for the back is because this plywood has a dimension of 5' by 5' that matches the width of the bookcase. The doors are rail and stile construction with a floating Birdseye Maple panel. The trim is a 1/4 by 1/4 inch round over, while the back of the doors have a 1/4 by 3/16 trim installed. The knobs are Walnut. The top of the bookcase has a 3/16 by 1 inch trim that adds contrast and continuity with the doors producing a well-balanced look.
Size:
Height 6 feet, width 5 feet, and depth 12 inches.
